Closed captioning on Crave

Closed captioning provides an onscreen display of a program’s audio as it happens, letting you read along while watching Crave programs, movies, and special events.

What is closed captioning on Crave?

Closed captioning provides a visual, onscreen display of a program’s audio as it happens, including dialogue, sound effects, and other audio cues.

It can be helpful in many situations, including:

  • For viewers who are deaf or hard of hearing
  • As a learning aid for people learning English as a second language
  • When watching in environments where audio is hard to hear or intentionally muted
What’s the difference between closed captioning and subtitles?

Closed captioning displays the full audio of a program as onscreen text, including spoken dialogue, sound effects, music cues, and other audio information that helps explain what’s happening on screen. It’s designed for accessibility.

Subtitles typically show only the spoken dialogue and limited onscreen text. They usually don’t include sound effects or other audio descriptions, and are primarily intended to translate dialogue.

Does Crave offer closed captioning on its content?

Yes. Crave offers closed captioning on 100% of its content, and most live events include closed captioning as well. A very small number of programs from Canadian broadcasters may not have closed captions.

How do I turn closed captions on or off?

To turn captions on: While watching a program, select the language icon at the bottom right of your video player, then select a language under Closed Captions.

To turn captions off: While watching a program, select the language icon at the bottom right of your video player, then select Off under Closed Captions.
